POTTER, BEATRIX. Group of 3 autograph letters signed ("H.B. Heelis" or "H.B.H."), to the Hill Top farm manager's son Ralph Cannon, mentioning his parents, property matters, school, etc.; and one autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis [Mrs. W. Heelis]"), a letter of recommendation for Ralph Cannon to an unnamed recipient. Cottage Castle, Sawrey, various dates [1934-37]. Together 9 pages, various 8vo sizes, written on rectos and versos, some spotting and soiling; 5 original envelopes (3 addressed by Potter). Ralph Cannon was one of the children of the Hill Top Farm Manager, John Cannon and his wife. He and his sister Betsy were the dedicatees of The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, (published in 1908). The Cannon children make an appearance in the book as well on p. 14, and their mother appears feeding her poultry on p. 8. This interesting group of letters were written to/about Ralph as a young man and demonstrate the interest Beatrix took in the lives of her young friends beyond childhood. 26 June 1937: "I have great pleasure in recommending Ralph Cannon, whom I have known since he was a child, when his parents were in my service. Ralph was too young to work for me but I employed the elder boys to help their father who was my farm bailiff until he left through ill health. The young people were exceptionally promising all well brought up. I have never lost sight of the family. Ralph came back from Staffordshire, relinquishing a successful business for a reason that was very much to his credit, namely the strain upon his mother, who was left with none of her children within call, his father being in continual bad health. I think Ralph a very capable worthy man - he loves the country, and has often told me how he longed to get out of town onto a farm or gardening or poultry. I remain yours truly..." (4)
