Beschreibung:

34.25 in. ln., with modern rubber tip; gold-filled handle with scroll and floral adornment, one side engraved with the following: Presented by / C.J. Knold / J. Coffey / C. Bicker / Sept. 10th 1892. Front end of handle engraved with initials KCF, back end engraved 1st Leut. / Co. I 40th Regt. / U.S. Vol. Mounted on wooden shaft. Because the 40th Regiment, U.S. Volunteers was a unit raised largely in Kansas that existed between June 1899 and June 1901 for service in the Philippines during the Philippine Insurrection, this is almost certainly a cane presented to a 1st Lieutenant of a 40th Volunteer Regiment that served during the Civil War, although the state is unknown. Practically every state raised a 40th Regiment. Unfortunately, two of the three names mentioned on the cane, C.J. Knold and C. Bicker, are not listed in the Civil War Database, Heitman, or the Volunteer Register, and there are approx. 79 men listed with the name J. Coffey. Condition: Light wear to wooden shaft.
