Beschreibung:

both oil on canvas, half-length portraits, probably executed in the 1830s or 1840s. In period, gilt frames; 29.25" x 24.5" (w/o frame), 37" x 32" (w/frames). Luke Kent, Jr. (1812-1895) was the son of Luke Kent, Sr., the Cincinnati watch and clock maker. He began to work for his father at age 16, he was his father's partner from 1840-1842, and then he took over the business upon his father's death in 1842. He produced a variety of silver, and also continued to make and retail watches, clocks, and jewelry. A fine ad for Kent appears in the 1864 Williams Cincinnati directory. The 1888 Centennial Review of Cincinnati reads The record of this house, covering a period embracing three-quarters of the century comprising the history of the city, is of uniform reliability and fairness in dealing, and it enjoys a steady and prosperous trade and a deservedly high place in public confidence. Portraits of early American artisans are very rare. Rarer still are portraits of 2 generations of artisans offered simultaneously. See also lot 207. Condition:Minor losses and tears, need cleaning; VG-.
