Beschreibung:

Lilly Martin Spencer (American, 1822-1902). An American portrait of Dr. Edward Van Wyck, ca 1880 and attributed to Lilly Martin Spencer Unsigned; 30 x 24 in. Lilly Martin Spencer was born in Marietta, OH, and began to work as an artist in Cincinnati during the early 1840s. A solo exhibit at a church drew the attention of Nicholas Longworth, major philanthropist and supporter of the arts, though she declined his offer to finance her study abroad. Spencer worked as a portrait artist throughout her career, and eventually was drawn to a more academic manner of painting after arriving in New York, in 1848. This portrait is emblematic of her later style, and was consigned by an Indiana family. Condition: Relined and with a later, period style frame. Minor inpainting on gentleman's collar. Appraisal included. Professional conserved and lined.
