PORTA, Giovanni Baptista della (1535-1615). De Distillatione Lib. IX. Rome: Camera Apostolica, 1608. 4° (206 x 156mm.). Laudatory epigrams in Hebrew, Greek, Chaldean, Arabic, Slavonic and Armenian, each with their Latin translations. Full-page copper-engraved portrait of the author by I. Laurus, 35 woodcut illustrations. (Neat repair of light worming to upper margin of title, just affecting one character, some light spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum. Provenance : Giovanni Battista Carcano (ownership inscription on title). FIRST EDITION. A fine copy with an interesting provenance of this treatise on distillation. Carcano was the pupil and designated successor of Fallopius in Padua, however on his master's death he left Padua for Pavia, took up the university seat of Professor of medicine and achieved some lasting measure of fame for his discoveries in the field of anatomy. The nine books deal with the various kinds of distillation: methods of extraction, the preparation of scented distilled waters, oils distilled from resins, oils distilled from woods, the distillation of corrosive mineral acids, the properties of these acids, distillation of alcohol from wine and the preparation of various ointments.
