September, 1937-February, 1938 [and] July-December, 1942. Two volumes, each containing six consecutive issues of Popular Comics (20-25 and 77-82). Bound in crimson cloth, sewn bindings, spines titled in gilt. Comics are trimmed but otherwise in about Very Fine condition with bright, glossy covers and cream pages with tanned edges, staples removed (as customary for bound volumes). Modest handling wear to bindings, spines sunned. Provenance: Front free endpapers rubberstamped: "Dell Publishing Co., Inc. / Library Copy / Do Not Remove." Popular Comics was Golden Age goliath Dell's first regular-format comic book series, following Dell's seminal tabloid-format The Funnies (the first magazine in America to feature comics not reprinted from newspaper strips). Popular Comics debuted in February, 1936 as a monthly anthology title, containing reprints of newspaper comic strips distributed by the Chicago Tribune Syndicate (Dick Tracy, The Gumps, Gasoline Alley, Harold Teen, Smokey Stover, Little Orphan Annie, Smilin' Jack, Terry and the Pirates and others). The series was packaged by M.C. Gaines, who went on to found All-American Publications and EC's original iteration, Educational Comics.
