POLK, JAMES K., President . Autograph letter signed ("James K. Polk," with flourish) as President, to Midshipman Thomas B. Childress, U.S. Navy, "Home Squadron"; Washington, D.C., 1 September 1846. 1 full page, 4to, 255 x 195 mm. (10 x 7¾ in.), with original autograph address panel with postmarks, chip and small tear to left-hand edge, letter and address panel matted and enclosed in attractive giltwood frame. PRESIDENT POLK'S ADVICE TO A YOUNG NAVAL CADET ON HIS "HONORABLE PROFESSION" "...[T]he Secretary of The Navy will forward you an order to day to report yourself at the Naval School at Annapolis on the 10th of October...I repeat my advice to you that you should not for a minute think of resigning your situation in the Navy...you would deeply regret it in future life. At Annapolis you will have an opportunity of being instructed in your duty, and when you shall again go to sea, I hope you may have a greater taste for the honorable profession you have chosen. I write you this private note as the old friend of your father...and [with] deep interest in your future welfare..."
