Typical cdv album, approx. 6 x 8.5 in., two clasps, each page with space for 2 cdvs. Album contains more than 80 cdv's, 72 of which are identified members of the General Assembly, plus Governors English (2), Buckingham, Ingersoll, and one of U.S. Grant. There are also 8 tintypes, which, along with the other cdv's, probably represent Wheeler's family. Letter tipped in on 23rd page from Barnum to assemblyman Thomas W. Wheeler of North Stonington, dated 30 June 1865, on Barnum's Lindencroft, Bridgecroft, CT letterhead. At Wheeler's request, Barnum sent a cdv of himself, plus an advertising cdv of Barnum's Collection of Curiosities. In spite of his mistrust of politics, Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1865 for Fairfield, and served two terms, but he was unsuccessful in his bid for U.S. Congress. He also served as Mayor of Bridgeport for one year, and is credited with many improvements to the town water supply, bringing gaslights to the streets, etc. Condition: Wear to covers, especially spine, expected folds on letter. Album still together (which many of these are not). Scattered foxing.
