Appleton Date: 1887 Description: xxiv, [3]-362 pp. Engraved frontispiece portrait with tissue guard. 8vo, original green cloth, spine & front cover decorated and lettered in gilt & black, in original jacket. “Household Edition,” later printing. The "Household Edition" was first issued in 1879 and which went through numerous dated editions at least until 1906. There is an introductory biography and appreciation by Richard Henry Stoddard. The rear of the dust-jacket bears a lengthy advertisement for a two-volume edition of Bryant's poems that was first published in 1878. Appleton altered the title-page date in each successive edition of the "Household Edition"'; so it may be inferred that this volume and its very scarce dust-jacket do date from around 1887. Glaister's Glossary of the Book states that, while the first printed dust-jackets appeared in the 1830's, they did not come into common use until the 1880's. BAL, I, p. 369. Lot Amendments Condition: Jacket soiled and frayed along edges; covers a bit musty, shelf wear, modern pencil inscription on front free endpaper; still very good overall, rarely seen in this 1887 jacket!
