Eastman (1816-1860), was a prosperous Vermont newspaper editor, Democratic politician, and versifier. With 2 original sketches on rear endpapers, depicting a U.S. military officer and a midshipman. The first sketch is captioned "Brevet Second Lieutenant Bonaparte-Legrande" with the upper notation: "Just Joined Officer from West Point" and signed "Ransom / Artist / 1871." The second drawing shows a young man in naval dress uniform leaning on a capstan, holding a telescope, with caption "A Passed Midshipman U.S.N." A signature in the book identifies the artist as Dunbar Richard Ransom, of Norwich, Vermont, a career soldier who attended West Point from 1847 to 1850; during the Civil War he was at the battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and Kearneysville. Lot Amendments Condition: Some fading to spine and edges, shelf wear, ends frayed, corners a bit bumped; hinges tender, other light wear; about very good, plus with two original pen & ink drawings.
