PLINIUS SECUNDUS, Gaius (Pliny the Elder, 23-79). Historia naturalis . Venice: Bartholomaeus de Zanis, 12 December 1496. Super-chancery 2° (314x207mm). Collation: a 6 b 8 c-z 8 & 8 A-C 8 D 10 (a1 title, a2r Life of Pliny, letter by Joannes Britannicus to Luca Tertius, letter by Alexander Benedictus to Matthaeus Rufus, letter by Rufus to Nicolaus Perotus, a4r ancient authors (Suetonius, Tacitus, Tertullian) on Pliny, a4v book 1 (preface, tables), c1r book 2, D9v register, D10 blank). 238 (of 240, lacking title, and without final blank) leaves, x1 and x2 reversed in binding and quire z bound after & with early note directing the reader to the proper folio. 62 lines and headline. Type: 2:80R 2 , 3:106R (title). Woodcut initials, 3-line initial spaces with printed guide-letters. (Small hole in s4 affecting a few letters, some staining and browning, slight wear in some upper margins.) Contemporary half calf over wooden boards, blindstamped, 2 brass fore-edge catches without clasps, 2 brass corner bosses to each cover, (spine worn, corner of back board chipped); two stamps in Schwenke-Sammlung (Granatapfel 36 and Rautengerank 132) designated as private ownership of Graf Oppersdorf. Provenance : Christopher Lamprechtshauss, Iste liber emptus est per me Cristofferum Lamprechtzhauss 149(-) sic ligatus pro (---) ; Klosterneuburg, monastery of St. Mary, inscription dated 1531; Johannes Weiss, note of gift dated 1546; Mathias Marcke of Eisenstadt, Hungary, 17-18th century inscription, Ex libris R. D. Mathiae Marcke Parochi Kismart' Abbatis ; some marginal annotations in several hands. This edition reprints that of Angelus and Jacobus Britannicus printed at Brescia in the same year, including the letter by Rufus, in which he attempts to prove that Pliny's birthplace was Verona and not Como.
