Collation: a b 8 c-e 8 f 6 g-z & A-I 8 K6 (a1r title, a1v dedication, a3r eulogies, a4r text, K6r colophon, K6v blank). 268 leaves. 57 lines and headline. Type: 3:180G; 2:83R. 4- to 11-line initial spaces, many with guide-letters. (Fo. c1 with clean repaired tear through top half of page, occasional wax stains and soil marks to text, some marginal soiling and waterstaining, q2 with short tear at head, some light worming of upper margins occasionally affecting headlines, I4.5 misbound in quire K.) 18th-century sheep, blue marbled edges, covers with gilt arms of the Podmaniczky family, spine gilt with contrasting lettering-piece (a few scuff marks). Provenance : Johannes Wienizer (note of his purchase of the book at Pressburg, 1631; further note of the book being purchased from Wienizer at Possen, 1670, by Thomas [?]Kaunizir, both on title; marginal annotations, possibly in the latter's hand) -- Podmaniczky family (binding). This attractive edition of Pliny's Natural History is a close reprint, with the same collation, of Benalius's 1497/98 edition. It includes the 'Castigationes Pliniae' of the humanist scholar Ermolao Barbaro, first published as a commentary in 1492. Well versed in Greek and Latin etymology, Barbaro claimed to have corrected 5000 errors in the Plinian text. H 13104; BMC V, 572 (IB. 24690); Polain (B) 3203; IGI 7982; Klebs 786.15; Goff P-800.
