PLATO. Dialogues of Plato. [Translated by Floyer Sydenham]. London: Printed for W. Sandby, 1767; Printed for the Author, 1773. 2 vols., 4to, contemporary calf, rebacked to style, corners worn. First collected edition of Sydenham's translations, 8 (of 13) parts, each part with special title-page (except for Meno and The Rivals ) and separate pagination, engraved folding plate on Vol. II. Sydenham (1710-1787), Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, devoted himself to the task of translating the works of Plato. In 1759 he published A Synopsis or General View of the Works of Plato , which served to introduce the subscribers to his division of the Platonic canon. He proposed to translate the whole of the works, but by the time of his death only nine had been issued: The Banquet, The Lesser and Greater Hippias, The First and Second Alcibiades, Philebus, Meno, The Rivals, and Io . Sydenham's translations were later incorporated into Thomas Taylor's The Works of Plato (1804), with Taylor's annotations. Sydenham's translations, the first direct translations into English of most of the dialogues, were first published separately from 1759-1780 and were subsequantly collected, but are not commonly found complete. This set contains A Synopsis, The Lesser Hippias, The Greater Hippias, The Banquet (first part), The First Alcibiades, Meno, and The Rivals. The Dedication (in A Synopsis in vol. I) to john, Earl Granville, is signed by Sydenham. (2)
