Die Vorlage bildet die von Cassini auf dem Fußboden des Pariser Observatoriums angebrachte Planisphäre mit einem Durchmesser von 7,8 m! Die erste, verkleinerte Ausgabe der Karte erfolgte durch Cassinis Sohn Jacques u. erschien bei J. B. Nolin 1696, sowohl von dieser Ausgabe als auch von der von 1712 sind nur wenige Exemplare nachweisbar. Bekannter ist die vorliegende Version mit der dekorativen Einfassung von P. D. Schoonebeck in Zusammenarbeit mit Goree u. Gouwen, die lt. Shirley um 1712 bei Francis Halma erschienen ist u. danach von Pieter van der Aa 1713 in sein 'Nouveau Theatre du Monde' sowie in seiner 'Galerie agréable' 1729 aufgenommen wurde. Nur van der Krogt im neuen Koeman nennt explizit 1707 als Erscheinungsjahr bei van der Aa. Kräftiger Abdruck. Gleichmäßig gebräunt u. etwas fleckig, tlw. durch Druckabklatsch. Mit mehreren, tlw. geglätteten Faltstellen, davon die horizontale mittig mit wenigen kl. Löchlein u. Rissen hinterklebt. Ober- u. Unterrand minimal ausgefranst bzw. mit kl. Einrissen; Quetschfalte mittig in der unteren Hälfte. Rare and important map on the equidistant azimuthal projection. "This planisphere may properly be called the first scientific map of the world" ( TWE ), based on the data collected by the Academie Royale over 20 years, mainly to improve the determination of the longitude, which was neccessary to c orr ect maps and especially the sailing charts. These astronomical observations on sightings of the moons of Jupiter were taken worldwide from over 40 stations, and not only from the larger and well-known ones in Paris, London or Rome, but also from Quebec, Peking, Goa, the Cape of Good Hope et al., all indicated by an asterisk on the map. The coordination was organized by the first director of the French Academy, Jean-Dominique (Giovanni Domenico) Cassini, who created a planisphere on the floor of the Paris observatory of c. 24 feet in diameter, in which he inserted all the new results. Surprisingly, only in 1696 Cassini's son Jacques drew the much reduced version, publ. by J. B. Nolin. A further ed. followed in 1712, but more popular became the derivative by Francis Halma of the same time, decorated with the grand classical figures at sides. This version was immediately adapted by Pieter van der Aa to his Nouveau Theatre du monde 1712, and once aggain to the Galerie agréable in 1729. Uncol. ; printed on 2 pieces of paper joined. Strong impression. Overall some browning, some spotting partly due to offsetting. Traces of the usual old folds, the horizontal one at center with repairs to only few tiny holes and small tears. Minor marginal fraying at top and bottom without affecting map; creasemark to lower half at center.
