First edition: ‘one of Pisemsky’s most universally acclaimed books’ (Moser, p. 54) epitomising the work of as ‘a chronicler of the life of the common people’ (Terras). Contemporary critics such as Nekrasov and Botkin managed only lukewarm praise, but Turgenev, who heard Pisemsky read the stories aloud, admired the book, and Chekhov later considered it the best of Pisemsky’s works.
