PIROGOV, Nikolai Ivanovich (1810-1881). Anatome topographica sectionibus per corpus humanum congelatum triplici directione ductis illustrata . St. Petersburg, 1852-1853-[1859].
PIROGOV, Nikolai Ivanovich (1810-1881). Anatome topographica sectionibus per corpus humanum congelatum triplici directione ductis illustrata . St. Petersburg, 1852-1853-[1859]. 4 atlas volumes, 2 o (534 x 375 mm). Printed titles. 224 lithographed plates (16 double-page) (a few plates cropped, affecting plate numbers and images). (Title-pages to volumes 2 and 3 only [repeated in volumes 1 and 4 possibly in facsimile], without the 6 text volumes published 6 years later.) 19th-century mottled boards (rebacked, repaired at corners). Provenance : from the collection of Dean Edell. FIRST EDITION very rare suite of plates being the first important anatomical atlas based on frozen sections. The technique had the advantage of enabling Pirogov to study the relationship of structures as they actually existed in the body without the inevitable disturbance caused by dissection. Pirogov's frozen cross-sections bear a close resemblance to modern images produced through computed tomography (CT), and may be appreciated as the first comprehensive record of how the body could be viewed in this way. In his appendix to Choulant (1920) Garrison wrote, "The first volume consists of life-size sections of the head, most in transverse planes; the second contains transverse and sagittal sections of the thorax; the third transverse, sagittal and frontal sections of the abdominal cavity in both sexes; the fourth sections in three planes through the extremities and their joints." (Choulant-Frank p. 408). Since Pirogov's text was published in a much smaller format six years after the atlas it is likely that few copies of the atlas would be associated with the accompanying text. Garrison-Morton 416; Roberts & Tomlinson p. 576.
