PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778) and Francesco (1748-1810). Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcofagi, Tripodi Lucerne ed ornamenti antichi . [Paris: c.1807-1835].
PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista (1720-1778) and Francesco (1748-1810). Vasi, Candelabri, Cippi, Sarcofagi, Tripodi Lucerne ed ornamenti antichi . [Paris: c.1807-1835]. 2 volumes, 2° (835 x 550mm). 112 plates including 2 engraved titles, one of these folding, after G.B. and F. Piranesi on laid paper without watermark, numbered in Arabic numerals in the top right-hand corner. (Without the printed dedication, light soiling and spotting, mostly marginal, tear to the fold of the first title, other tears and old repairs.) Disbound. A WELL-MARGINED SET. Intermediate Paris edition. The complete set of etchings reproduced in Wilton-Ely is represented here. The restoration and sale of classical antiquities increased throughout the 18th century at Rome, and Piranesi began his involvement in this market in the 1760s. He collaborated with Thomas Jenkins and Gavin Hamilton who had undertaken a series of highly profitable excavations in the Pantanello area of Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli. From 1768 Piranesi began issuing individual plates of objects either passing through the trade or in collections, dedicating them to colleagues and sponsors of these projects. The plates were eventually assembled together and first published in Rome in 1778. After that initial series of etchings was produced, Piranesi's son Francisco created an additional 8 which are present here. Hind p. 87; Wilton-Ely 888-1005.
