Orbis Sensualium Pictus… Visable World: or a Nomenclature, and Pictures, of all the Chief Things that are in the World, and Men's Employment therein; in above 150 cuts…translated into English by Charles Hoole, M.A…the Twelfth Edition.
London: for S. Leacroft, 1777. 12mo (180 x 105 mm.). 152 numbered woodcuts in text. Late eighteenth-century English red straight-grained morocco, covers with double gilt fillet, spine in six compartments and gilt across the bands, blue watered silk liners, g.e., morocco-backed folding case (hinges of case split). Bookplate removed. Condition : Slight intermittent spotting. Provenance : H.L. Piozzi; G.W. Coventry; un-named owner (sale, Christie's New York, 9 June 1993, lot 64, $3,800) Twelfth Edition. presentation copy from hester lynch piozzi "To George Coventry Esq.|aged six Years", her autograph inscription, including eight lines in verse, written lengthwise on front flyleaves: "…Streatham Surrey|Whate'er can sooth, whate'er afflict us,|You'll find within this Orbis Pictus.|Sweet! then accept the Present made|This Portrait of a World display'd:|For Learning's End--respect the means,|And heedful turn these varying Scenes;|Of which your Good the sole Design is,|Quite down from Frontispiece to Finis .|H: L: Piozzi|10:April|1791" Bound in between the flyleaves and the title is a drawing of a young boy playing ball , pencil and watercolor, unsigned but with an erased pencil inscription. George William Coventry was the first born and eldest son of George William Conventry (1758-1831), Viscount Deerhurst, seventh earl of Coventry (1809) and Margaret Pitches (1760-1840), the daughter of Sir Abraham Pitches (d. 1792), a brandy merchant and a Streatham resident (see Piozzi Letters , I, p. 344 n.). Peggy Pitches was a particular friend of Mrs. Piozzi's, living in the same parish. It is likely that this book was a Communion present to her first child.
