PINCKNEY]. An excellent collection of 16 letters and documents by members of this distinguished South Carolina family, including: -- PINCKNEY, Charles Cotesworth (1746-1825), American diplomat . ALS signed ("Charles Cotesworth Pinckney") AS VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, to Henry Rutledge, Shepherdstown, 18 September 1800. 3 pages, 4to, address leaf, black wax seal partly intact . An excellent letter. Adams and Pinckney were the Federalist party's nominees for President and Vice-President in the election of 1800, opposing Jefferson and Burr. A month before the election, Pinckney writes: "...I have received assurances from good authority that Jersey & Maryland will be both federal, tho' the opposition in the former is considerable. I should not be surprised if the Antis are disappointed in this state. I am happy to hear that the Federalists are turning out in our state... the want of exertion is the bane of Federalism. I did not expect that I should have met with so much opposition in Carolina and am surprised to find some names averse to my election...You may assure my friends in Charleston that I shall serve in the assembly if elected..." He reports on the war in Europe, speculates that French success in Italy will make U.S. diplomatic missions unsuccessful and vows that if he is "unsuccessful in the ensuring election," he will return to the practice of law. -- PINCKNEY, C.C. Als signed ("Charles Cotesworth Pinckney") to Joseph Clay, Charleston, 26 January 1801. 2 pages, 4to, small seal tear, integral autograph address panel . Together 8 pages, folio & 4to. The brother of Charles Cotesworth to various correspondents. One letter, written at the height of the war of 1812, is to the Governor of Georgia: "...I am assured you will issue such directions to your officers near the Sea Coast as you may deem expedient." -- PINCKNEY, Charles (1754-1824), Governor . Three ALs ("Charles Pinckney"), various places, 17 June 1789 - 10 September 1791. Together 3 pages, folio & 4to .
