PIGAFETTA, Francisco and MAXIMILIANUS TRANSYLVANUS. Il viaggio fatto da gli Spagnovoli atorna a'l Mondo . [Venice], 1536.
PIGAFETTA, Francisco and MAXIMILIANUS TRANSYLVANUS. Il viaggio fatto da gli Spagnovoli atorna a'l Mondo . [Venice], 1536. 4 o (198 x 138 mm). Late 18th/early 19th century vellum (covers slightly bowed); cloth folding case. FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN, "doubtless intended as a continuation or fourth part of the collection of voyages printed at Venice in 1534" (Church), with which this is bound (see below). The text includes two distinct and original accounts of Magellan's voyage around the world: the first by Maximilianus Transylvanus is translated into Italian from Latin and occupies 12 leaves in signatures A-C. The second is Pigafetta's short account which he published from his own manuscript journal; this is a translation from Fabre's French abridgement of the journal published at Paris circa 1525. Alden & Landis 536/114; BM/STC Italian 428; Borba de Moraes II:547-48; Church 74; Harrisse 215; JCB (3) I:120; Palau 158777 and 225741; Sabin 47042. [ Bound with: ] MARTYR, Peter (Pierto Martire D'ANGHIERA). Libro primo della historia de l'Indie Occidentali . Venice, 1534. Three parts in one, 4 o. Folding woodcut map "Isola Spagnvola," 4 woodcuts in text. (Printer's defect on P4 causing loss of a few letters.) CONTAINING THE FIRST MAP OF HISPANIOLA, according to Church. The three parts of this work are seldom found together. The first appears to have been taken from the Decades of Peter Martyr; the second from the work of Oviedo; while the third is a translation of the anonymous work La conquista del Peru (Seville, 1534). Harrisse describes a large map of the West Indies which is lacking here, and was also recorded as lacking in the Church copy. The small map here is the first of Hispaniola, according to Church, and is also very rare. The entire work, including the map, was reprinted in Ramusio's Navigationi et Viaggi (1556). Alden & Landis 534/28; Arents Tobacco 3; Borba de Moraes II:530-31; Church 69; Harrisse 190; JCB (3) I:119; Palau 12601; Sabin 1565; Stevens Nuggets 1808. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , no copies of either the 1534 work, or the 1536 continuation have sold in at least the last thirty years.
