PICKETT, GEORGE, Major General, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed ("G.E. Pickett") to North Carolina Gov. Zebulon B. Vance (1830-1894), "Head Quarters, Dept North Carolina," Petersburg, Va., 11 December 1863. 1 pages, 4to . A WAR-DATE PICKETT LETTER Pickett has been informed by Col. Eppa Hunton that "he has some 800 men under his command and he hopes shortly to organize them into a Regt. to be turned over to the Confederate Service. The portion of the state in which he is operating is of immense advantage to us in furnishing provisions, and it is deemed judicious by the War Dept. that all the troops in the Dept. of N.C. should be under the control of the Cmdg. Offr. of same. I therefore thought it better to advise with your Excellency on the subject. If compatible with your views, I think the force under Col. Hunton might be at onceturned over to the Confederate service. At any rate I would be much obliged for a return from your Adj. Genl. Office of the force in that section of the country, between the Chowan & Roanoake [Rivers]. My Inspr. Genl....is now on a tour of Inspection through the Dept and will take that section 'en route.'" With Vance's bold note at bottom of page 2: "The Legislature refused to allow me to turn over these troops, but I will be glad to order them to report to you for duty." Pickett's letters are exceptionally rare: ABPC records only a clipped signature and an 1849 LS in twenty years.
