Vance, Robert H. Large whole plate daguerreotype portrait of Joseph Ware. [San Francisco: circa 1855.] 21.5 x 16.5 cm; 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Gilt oval mount in custom case with felt pad bearing legend "RH Vance's premium daguerrean galleries San Francisco Sacramento Marysville." Case with some edge wear, lacking one brass clasp, else fine. An exceptionally rare and large whole plate daguerreotype of a prominent San Francisco pioneer. Joseph Ware emigrated from Massachusetts to Valparaiso in 1847, and then to San Francisco in 1850. He died in the city in 1856 of unknown causes and was returned to his hometown of Dorchester in a lead coffin in 1857, according to an obituary in his hometown paper. Whole plate daguerreotypes by Vance of this quality are quite uncommon. See illustration.
