PHOTOGRAPHS -- Albums of photographs recording extensive journeys through Western Russia, Crimea, the Caucasus and Central Asia. St. Petersburg, Tiflis and others, mostly 1894-96.
PHOTOGRAPHS -- Albums of photographs recording extensive journeys through Western Russia, Crimea, the Caucasus and Central Asia. St. Petersburg, Tiflis and others, mostly 1894-96. 4 vols, 2° (240 x 340mm), comprising 202 photographs (c.195 x c.250mm, 51 of these 110x 160mm and smaller) mounted on card, some with letter-press captions in the negative, most with pencilled captions in German on the mount and some with later, typed captions in English. (Occasional light fading, some spotting in the mounts.) Contemporary brick-red cloth by R.A. Pannagl of Vienna, upper sides titled in gilt, edges gilt, printed endpapers, later typed lists of captions pasted on the endpapers (light rubbing, traces of removed labels on the upper sides.) Provenance : Major General Alfred Schenk. SOUTHERN RUSSIA AND CENTRAL ASIA IN PHOTOGRAPHS, arranged in four albums: Central Asia, comprising: Transcaspia, Uzbekistan, Turkestan and North Persia -- including views in Bukhara, Samarkand, and Mashad, and portraits, including Abdul-Ahad-Khan, Emir of Bukhara, and soldiers in the region, and scenes of daily life, including a public hanging in Samarkand. Crimea and the Caucasus -- including views of Yalta, Kerch, Bakhchisaray, Balaklava, Tbilisi, Dagestan, and Baku, including the Nobel oil refinery, and portraits of Count Kasai, and various Caucasians peoples. The Volga and its environs, Western Siberia, and the Kyrgys Steppe -- including views in Nizhny Novgorod and the All-Russia Exhibition staged there in 1896, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, and Orenburg, and scenes along the Volga including 'The Field Marshal Suvorov' and various ships sailing the great river. St. Petersburg, Moscow and Finland -- including a portrait of Alexander III with Tsarevich Nicholas and other members of the imperial family, and views of Peterhof, Nevskii Prospekt, Tsarskoe Selo, Tverskaia Street, the Kremlin, and St. Basil's Cathedral. The work of various photographers, including A. Engel of Tbilisi, A. Mishon of Baku, and Kh. Khunzakh, and evidently compiled by Major General Schenk: the lot includes a patent in favour of Schenk issued by Emperor Franz Joseph I, a signed document issued by King Wilhelm of Prussia, and a photographic portrait of Schenk by Bayer of Vienna.
