Title: Photograph album with thirty-four original photographs of Raton, New Mexico Author: ** Place: Publisher: Date: [c.1900] Description: 34 original silver print photographs, mounted to leaves within a photograph album (in black wrappers). Photographs measure 12x16.5 cm. (4¾x6½"). All photographs are captioned (except for the various grand homes pictured). Including wonderful photographs of the historic Raton downtown area. Including a photograph of the Raton railroad station. Built in 1903 by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, the Raton railroad station stands as a monument to the city’s Spanish beginnings. Other important photographs show merchants on First and Second Streets, hotels, churches, and the Miners Hospital, plus several grand residences, including the Sheriff's home, and the high school. The coal mining town of Raton, New Mexico emerged when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad placed its repair shop at the southern base of Raton Pass. The population quickly grew as coal deposits, ranch land, and railroad interests made Raton a prosperous town. Lot Amendments Condition: Photographs are near fine. Item number: 230119
