The rare first book by the author of the System der Wissenschaft and the Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, written while he was a Privatdozent (unsalaried lecturer) at Jena. The "Differenz" (literally "The Difference Between Fichte's and Schelling's Systems of Philosophy") was Hegel's defense of the system of philosophy promoted by Schelling, who had been his university roommate and friend, and who helped him obtain the Jena position. Ultimately the two became rivals, as some enmity was created by writings of Hegel that Schelling felt to be critical of his work. C
