Phillip King PPRA (British, born 1934) Ubu's Camel Bronze with verdigris patina From an edition of 3 58cm high, 85cm wide On view at: Dreweatts Donnington Priory Phillip King was born in Tunisia to a British father and French mother, and read modern languages at Christ's College, Cambridge, before pursuing his passion for sculpture at Central St Martin's in 1957-8. While at St Martin's he studied under Anthony Caro and later worked alongside Caro as an assistant to Henry Moore King's long and illustrious career has included teaching posts at St Martin's, the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1999, has been a trustee at the Tate, and was also awarded a CBE. He has had several retrospective exhibitions of his work, including at the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1968) and at the Hayward Gallery (1981), and more recently at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 1997. Significantly, an exhibition of his work was held at the Forte di Belvedere, Florence in 1997. King was only the second English sculptor to be given this honour, following in the footsteps of Henry Moore King is primarily known for his large scale, brightly coloured steel sculptures, which established him as an influential member of the New Generation Sculptors in the 1960s. The present bronze shows King as a sensitive modeller, and is more akin to the smaller clay sculptures of his early career
