AN ANNIVERSARY OFFERING FROM CHAMPAGNE PHILIPPONNAT Christie’s are delighted to be offering lots direct from the cellars of Champagne Philipponnat, part of their 500th year anniversary celebrations of Aprvil le Philipponnat’s arrival in Champagne in 1522. Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vines all in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Aÿ, Avenay Val d’Or and Mutigny. Mareuil-sur-Aÿ makes up the majority of the house’s holdings, and unsurprisingly, is the location of the House’s infamous 5.83-hectare Clos des Goisses, Clos des Goisses is the pinnacle of the production from the House of Philipponnat and could very well be champagne’s most renowned vintage-dated, single-vineyard champagne. Purchased by Pierre Philipponnat in 1935, Clos des Goisses is a steep, south-facing vineyard, where some of the warmest temperatures recorded in the region are with average temperatures 1.5 degrees warmer than the average in Champagne, producing fantastic ripe Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This ideal placement means that Clos des Goisses thrives even in less successful vintages and the resulting wine is long-lived and of singular character. The wines are fermented in a combination of oak and stainless steel giving the wines texture and a hint of spice. Charles Philipponnat stated “Clos des Goisses is like a Burgundian Grand Cru not a Prestige Cuvée, it is from the terroir - a lot more than a prestige Cuvée”. Clos des Goisses is typically intensely aromatic and opulent and generous, with rich flavours of red fruits and hints of spice from the use of oak for the first fermentation with a truly impressive longevity. Clos des Goisses production is limited due to the size of the vineyard, with on average between 25,000 to 30,000 bottles each vintage, although some years far fewer such as in 2012, with only 13,296 bottles produced. Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé was first produced with the 1999 vintage. L.V. stands for “Long Vieillissement” as these wines have extended lees ageing; released 25 years after the harvest for Clos des Goisses and 20 years after the harvest for Grand Cru 1522. Officially the L.V. project began with the release of the Clos des Goisses vintages 1992 L.V. and 1993 L.V. in 2018. These superlative wines are released in very limited quantities, typically only a few hundred bottles and even fewer magnums of each vintage, and therefore are highly collectible. Each is presented in a numbered original wooden case having aged in the perfect conditions in the deep chalk cellars of Philipponat’s Caveau du Trésor. Tim Triptree MW International Director, Christie's Wine & Spirits Department Philipponnat, Clos des Goisses 1975 Mareuil-sur-Aÿ In original wooden case. Original tissue. Disgorged in June 2009. Excellent appearance 1 bottle per lot
