PHILIPPES, Henry (1648-1677). The Advancement of the Art of Navigation . London: R. & W. Leybourn, 1657. Four parts in one volume, 4 o (195 x 147 mm). Numerous woodcut illustrations in text, trigonometric diagrams and charts, bookseller's advertisement on verso of 3E/4. (Some foxing and spotting.) Early rebinding in period style-calf, preserving original endpapers (hinges cracked, corners slightly worn). FIRST EDITION. Philippes's work is comprised of four parts: "The Advancement of the Art of Navigation (The Sea-Man's Canon of Triangles)"; "The Sea-mans Canon of Triangles or, New Tables of Sines... plainly resolving all cases of Right lined triangles"; "A Brief Canon of Triangles... To every degree... to the Radius of 10000"; "The Advancement of the Art of Navigation. The Second Part. Shewing several wayes for the regulating of the Log-line; for the more exact finding of the true way of a Ship thereby." The work is dedicated to Oliver Cromwell, whom he asks to consider "establishing a Colledge of Sea-Men" that will acts as "a constant Seminary of Sea-Men... by which means our Seas will be secured and our Rights maintained, our Traffick increased, our Navies strengthened, and our Enemies subdued..." Phillippes "published his own Almanack for 4 years... He was considered an authority on compass variation" and river tides--the latter he closely studied from his home on London Bridge (Taylor Mathematical Practitioners p.234). Wing P-2042.
