Working alongside Abstract expressionists, such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning during the 1960s, Guston helped to lead the transition from Abstract expressionism to Neo-expressionism, abandoning pure abstraction for a cartoonish, yet literal rendering of his surroundings. Self-portraits depicting Guston's true likeness are virtually non-existant, save for the metaphoric self-portraits of Guston as a Klansman from the 1930s or as a cartoon character.
