London: Thomas Dawks for the author, 1683. 2 parts in 1 volume, 2° (354 x 220mm.). Engraved portrait frontispiece of the author by R. White, 43 engraved illustrations, fine decorative initials. Old mottled calf, spine gilt (scuffed). Provenance : Bridget Osborne, Duchess of Leeds (signature circa 1694-1704); Duke of Leeds (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION. The first part is a translation of Lazarus Ercker's classic work on assaying; the second part is a dictionary of metallurgical terms, the first such in English. Pettus was deputy of the royal mines, but also spent sometime in Fleet prison. Fleta is perhaps a reference to the book having been composed whilst the author was incarcerated. Wing P-1907.
