Pétrus 1960
12 half bottles per lot
A CONTINENTAL COLLECTION INCLUDING RARE HALF BOTTLES OF PETRUS AND MATURE BURGUNDY LOTS 628 TO 640 This collection was recently removed from the cellar of a classic Belgium restaurant. The cool and damp storage conditions have ensured excellent levels for age. The colours of the wines are healthy. The wines we tasted underlined this as well. Unfortunately the labels of all wines have suffered from the damp conditions. Clearly a collection for collectors searching for mature classic wines to drink and enjoy. 1960 Pétrus The 1960 came just after the great Pétrus 1959 and when still in cask it was already clear that 1961 would be another legendary vintage. As a result the wines from this vintage were completely overlooked not by one but two amazing vintages. 1960 was destined to be the ugly duckling. By tasting this well cellared half bottle it turns out to be a beautiful swan after all! All the half-bottles were part of a larger stock of Pétrus bought in the sixties by a Belgian restaurateur. The Belgians have a fine nose for gastronomy and Pomerol wines were in high demand early on before they were discovered by the rest of the world. The cool and damp conditions of this restaurant cellar have ensured an excellent very slow development of this Pétrus 1960. If you are not bothered by the state of most labels, on a large number of the half bottles the labels are all gone, then you have the chance to acquire a very rare Pétrus in great condition. The great condition of these half bottles makes it even sadder, as since the 2011 vintage, Pétrus no longer bottles any half bottles. EV Now lying in Corsham, Wiltshire (Octavian) Pétrus 1960 Pomerol, cru exceptionnel Not in original wooden case. Scuffed capsules, two slightly damaged. Very badly bin-soiled and very badly damaged labels, some becoming detached. Levels: nine base of neck, two top, one upper-shoulder. Tasting note: A Château-bottled half-bottle with into neck level, capsule and cork fully branded, label missing; Deep brick red with orange rim. At first still closed and not showing much, after some air nicely opening up. Fresh dark fruit aroma’s, smoky bacon, and leather. A complex nose of great promise. After half an hour fully open and full of life. Surprising lively appearance of great joy. Rich fruit intensity in start of taste, fairly sweet attack in an otherwise dry wine. Well developed with reserve still. Meat, bacon and truffle aroma’s followed by a fine acidity on a soft well balanced dry finish. Great tannin structure. In an elegant style, for Pétrus. Not the greatest year but one of sweet elegance. Great wine. Amazing strength for a half of bottle of this age. Bags of life still ahead. Time caught in a half bottle. February 2015 E.V. 12 half bottles per lot
