CONTEMPORARY FRENCH BINDING BY THE 'PECKING-CROW BINDER' (?THOMAS WOTTON'S BINDER A): citron morocco, the covers tooled in gilt and painted red and green to a geometrical design of a large lozenge intersecting a rectangle, surrounded by an outer strapwork border, with a centrally-placed rectangle lettered 'Il Petrarcha', above and below it open leafy and decorative painted tools and straight and semi-circular fillets, the whole interspersed with solid arabesque tools and the stamp of a large crow pecking at grain repeated four times, remains of cloth ties, edges finely gauffered and painted red and green with vases and various classical motifs (some neat retouching of painted areas, later vellum doublures and endleaves). Provenance : Bertram Ashburnham, Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878); Sir George Holford (sale Sotheby's Dec 8th 1927, lot 601, sold to Rosenbach for ¨650). AN MAJOR BINDING FROM ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ATELIERS OF THE MID-16TH CENTURY. The shop numbered amongst its patrons some of the greatest bibliophiles of their age: François I of France, James V of Scotland and Thomas Wotton, inter alia . The bindery was first identified by Dr.I.Schunke in 1953, and named the 'Pecking Crow Binder' after the atelier's most distinctive tools by H.M.Nixon in his Sixteenth-century Gold-tooled Bookbindings in the Pierpont Morgan Library . More recently Dr.Mirjam Foot ( The Henry Davis Gift. [London: 1978] vol.I, pp.129-138) has suggested that there is an argument for "conflating Wotton's binder A and the Pecking Crow Binder... the two shops seem to have had certainly five and possibly eight tools and possibly a set of letters in common."
