Woodcut title incorporating Giolito device, 7 text illustrations, one full-page illustration, historiated initials, Giolito device at end. (Stained.) BINDING: Venetian binding by the Cicero Binder in 1547 for Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle; gold-tooled red morocco over thin pasteboard, gilt and blind fillet borders, central shaped compartment on upper cover lettered IL PETRAR CHA, 3 double and 4 single spine bands, blind-tooled compartments with wide fillet band and fleur-de-lis, spine label, edges gilt and lightly gauffered with dotted-line frame, purple title band painted across upper fore-edge and lettered in gold (now illegible), without 4 pairs of red silk ties, original endpapers with anchor watermark, similar to numerous examples in Piccard Anker , such as V:230, 236, 265, 269, 292, 297, 315, 335, chainlines measuring 60mm (discreet restoration at head of spine, small restorations on front cover, neat tear at spine foot, faint stain); modern half black morocco folding case by J. Brockman. Hobson, Renaissance , app. 7, no. 29; Cinq siècles d'ornements , no. 10; Hobson/Culot 2 10; Musea Nostra , p. 22; F. & L. Macchi, Dizionario illustrato della legatura , Milan, 2002, pl. XIII. PROVENANCE: Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle (1517-1586), Bishop of Arras, created Cardinal in 1561 (armorial stamp on title verso) -- 16/17th-century shelfmark '121 304' on title -- Thomas Sutton Oxford (18th-century flyleaf inscription) -- sale Christie's, 8 December 1982, lot 76. Granvelle's shipment of 4 cases of books and other luxuries from Venice in 1547 contained not only books bound by the Fugger Binder (see lot -- Machiavelli) but also those bound by the Cicero Binder, so called for the Aldine Cicero editions he bound for Hurtado de Mendoza (Hobson, Renaissance , p.121). Gabriele de Giolito, whose service for Granvelle is documented at a slightly later date, was undoubtedly involved in the 1547 shipment, as the high proportion of Giolito imprints, particularly among books bound by the Cicero Binder (such as the present Petrarch) indicates. Adams P-813.
