Provenance The Photographer's Gallery, London Catalogue Essay It was Cecil Beaton who originated Pulham’s impulse towards taking photographs and he continued to shape his artistic career. He discovered Beaton’s work in VOGUE during his first year at Oxford University. Beaton’s taste for exotic fantasies significantly shaped Pulham’s later masterpieces, such as the portrait of Leonora Fini. Beaton’s strong inclination towards romanticism is regarded to have significantly influenced Pulham’s interpretation of Neo-Victorianism. Among young pioneers including Barbara Ker-Seymour, Brian Howard, and Evelyn Waugh, Pulham was part of the group Bright Young People forming the London vanguard using negative printing and solarisation in portraiture. In Paris, he was part of the Surrealist milieu and was in close contact with key Surrealist and Neo-Romantic artists including Salvador Dali and Max Ernst Besides Cecil Beaton and George Hoyningen-Huene Man Ray played an important role in Pulham’s career.
