Peter Fischli and David Weiss Vase 1986 Black rubber. 35 x 22 x 22 cm. (13 3/4 x 8 5/8 x 8 5/8 in).
Provenance Art & Public, Geneva Exhibited Kunsthaus Zurich, Stiller Nachmittag, Aspekte Junger Schweizer Kunst, 11 September – 1 November, 1987 Literature Exhibition Catalogue, Kunsthaus Zurich, Stiller Nachmittag, Aspekte Junger Schweizer Kunst, Zurich, 1987, p. 64 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss have been collaborating since 1979 continuously confronting, whilst humorously celebrating the sheer banality of everyday existence. The present lot is a prime example of the duos rubber series, in which they focused on reconfiguring seemingly ordinary objects such as the vase and have presented the work within a sculpted context. Underlying all of their work is a childlike spirit of discovery which encourages the viewer to look afresh at their surroundings. In Fischli and Weiss’s world everyday objects take on an unexpectedly lifelike quality – they balance on each other, play off each other and collide into one another with a witty intelligence infused by the artist.
