Madrid, 1865" oblong folio (205 x 265mm.), manuscript on paper, approximately 130 leaves, with numerous sketches and diagrams (some coloured), the translation halted at the beginning of book 3, contemporary half calf over green cloth, modern marbled calf drop-backed box and slipcase, occasional smudging,hinges repaired A Spanish translation of Girard's Géométrie descriptive (1840) but with a manuscript title-page ascribing it to Madrazo. The signature "Federico Madrazo" appears at the end but in a different hand from the text and not closely resembling the artist Madrazo's signature. PROVENANCE: inscription on flyleaf stating that this came from Madrazo's daughter Jenoveva, dated 14 February 1874 Carlos Alberto Cruz a distinguished Chilean architect, bibliophile and connoisseur, has assembled collections of widely varied character and extraordinary interest. While building a collection of Spanish Old Master paintings, drawings and sculpture, his restless, discerning eye also identified and pursued unexpected and fascinating spheres of art history, such as avant-garde photography, rare books and manuscripts, Colonial silver, and the revolutionary art movements of the early 20th century. His acquisitions embrace all these specialisms and reveal his eye for quality and his engagement with the historical and intellectual hinterland of his collecting interests.
