Second English edition of Bougainville's 1763 private expedition to found a colony on the Falklands, on which Pernety sailed as secretary. France named the islands the Malouines for her ships and men that hailed from St. Malo and Bougainville used that name when he planted the French flag at Port Louis in 1764. Commodore Byron of the 'Dolphin' repeated the formalities of claiming the islands for Britain the following year by planting her flag at Port Egmont, Falkland Islands.
