Beschreibung:

.50 caliber, 48" octagonal barrel; buckhorn rear sight; silver blade front sight. Lockplate marked Leman, Lancaster PA. Full stock with brass patchbox, triggerguard, German silver escutcheons with wedges holding barrel to the stock. This rifle was acquired by John T. Murray and is reputed to have from the estate of "Big Foot" Wallace of Texas. William A.A. Wallace (1817-1899) arrived in frontier Texas in 1837 and over the course of the next 40 years crafted a reputation as a living American folk hero. Said to have been a man of incredibly imposing stature, the legendary Texan skirted danger as a Ranger, Indian fighter, mail carrier, hunter, and soldier -- the avowed enemy of all Mexicans and Comanches. In 1870 a best-selling book called The Adventures of Big Foot Wallace was published that has since undergone multiple printings. In later years "Bigfoot" capitalized on his fame settling into the role of "folksy" story teller. The flinty frontiersman was prone to aggrandizement -- his stories as large as the state itself -- but excused by fellow Texans all the same. In 1899 Bigfoot, Texas was renamed in Wallace's honor after his death. "Bigfoot" was buried in Texas State Cemetery in Austin among the state's luminaries. Provenance: John T. Murray Condition: Barrel has dark brown patina mixed with pitting. Lock and hammer have a nice brown patina with good markings. Stock has been varnished over and has two old areas of repair. Some of the silver escutcheons were replaced during restoration. Brass has been lightly cleaned and has begun to tarnish. A very nice item for the Western collector.
