Pentecost in a finely illuminated historiated initial, on a cutting most probably from a choirbook, manuscript on parchment [Italy (probably Florence), second half of fifteenth century] Square cutting, enclosing a large C in pink, blue and green acanthus leaves heightened with white penwork, enclosing the Virgin and a host of followers as three-quarter bust portraits with single-line gold haloes, all crowded into the space of the initial, and beneath a wide blue ground, the initial on gold grounds, tiny amount of rubbing to one face, some crackling and losses to gold, laid down on card mount, else good condition, 86 by 83mm.; old wooden frame with label on reverse of Frederic Petit, Rue Ampere, 95, Dorure & encadrements This illumination is by Vante di Gabriello di Vante Attavanti (1452-1520/25), also known as Attavante degli Attavanti, or a close follower. His expressive style was influenced by Domenico Ghirlandaio and Antonio Pollaiuolo and has rightly earned him fame as [t]he most famous and most representative artist of Italian miniature painting (M. Bollati, Dizionario Biografico dei Miniatori Italiani, 2004, pp. 975-979). He is first recorded working in 1483, and went on to produce manuscripts for Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary and various members of the Medici family.
