Beschreibung:

pencil drawing, 305 x 465mm., signed, dated and indistinctly inscribed with location in Ceylon, framed and glazed, 1906; with a copy of Richard Lydekker's 'Animal Portraiture, Being Fifty Studies by Wilhelm Kuhnert', vignette title and 50 mounted coloured plates, dampstaining affecting title, prelims, index, first three and last two plates, last gatherings loose, boards defective, folio, Frederick Warne & Co., 1912 (2) *** Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865-1926) trained at the Royal Academy in Berlin, specialising in animal painting under Paul Meyerheim, as well as landscape painting under Ferdinand Bellerman. Studying animals in Berlin zoo engendered a desire to travel to Africa to portray them in their natural environment. Through the explorer and naturalist Hans Meyer he was commissioned to illustrate Brehms Tierbuilder, from the proceeds of which, and with Meyer's safari equipment, he made his first trip to East Africa in 1891. He was granted the medal of honour when his paintings were exhibited in Berlin in 1893. He returned to Africa in 1905, but rather than returning to his wife and daughter after a year, he detoured to Ceylon, during which trip this drawing was produced, not returning to Germany until 1908. He wife had divorced him in 1907. Kuhnert returned to Africa again in 1911, and published two major works on African animals in 1920, Im Lande Meiner Modelle, and Mein Tierre.
