A FINE, LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION on the pursuit of Francis Drake through the Straits of Magellan by the Spanish commander sent to drive him from Spanish American waters. In 1578 his ship was attacked and plundered by Drake at Valparaiso and, believing Drake would return to England eastward, he began his long search though the straits. His explorations and charts made during six more years of continuous voyages are said to be the most serious and thorough of the Straits of Magellan prior to the voyage of H.M.S. Beagle . In 1581 he was second-in-command of Spain's first Armada which sailed to secure the straits against the English and only succeeded in founding the settlement at 'Fort Famine' by 1583. He rounded Patagonia four times, suffered repeated shipwreck, mutiny, plots, desertion and imprisonment, in England and in France. To 'have the luck of Pedro de Sarmiento' is a saying still in use. Edited with an Introduction and Postscript by Bernardo de Yriarte from the original manuscript in the Royal Library, Madrid, with a defense of the author against accusations that he deserted the settlers at Fort Famine and caused their deaths, a full account of that settlement, and a summary of his voyages from contemporary records.
