PEAKE, Mervyn. "Love I Had Thought It Rocklike," a six stanza poem of betwwen 5 and 11 lines per stanza, written in brown ink on two foolscap folio sheets, unsigned, the first stanza reading: "I had thought it rocklike, /Rooted, and foursquare: /But it was a bird of the air -- /Restless, winged for flying, /Delicate, and perilously rare"; together with a second manuscript poem by Peake, also unsigned, entitled "The Consumptive -- Belsen 1945," in irregular metre on one foolscap sheet; and a typed poem, unsigned, with the title "The vastest things are those we may not learn" in manuscript. This shorter poem reads: "The vastest things are those we may not learn: /We are not taught to die, nor to be born, /Nor how to burn /With love. /How pitiful is our enforced return /To those small things we are masters of." Also included in this lot are two small portrait sketches by Peake, unsigned, and a visiting card. (a lot)
