EDITIO PRINCEPS of this important historical and topographical description of Greece, which is particularly valuable for its observations on artistic monuments; their accuracy is confirmed by existing remains. It is Musurus's last edition for the Aldine Press, called by N.G.Wilson 'one of the best of the editiones principes' ( From Byzantium to Italy p.155). In the dedicatory letter Musurus praises Lascaris for his ceaseless efforts in the struggle to deliver Greece from Turkish bondage, and for his many literary services to the Greeks of Venice and elsewhere. The publisher's note explains the usefulness to the reader of running chapter titles. The edition had been planned since 1497 and in 1502 Aldus thanked Johannes Calpurnius for the loan of his Pausanias manuscript. Aubrey Diller identified this 15th-century manuscript exemplar in 1957 as Florence Ricc.gr.29 ( Transactions and Proceedings of the American Philological Association 88 [1957], 181, 184f). Renouard 76.3; Isaac 12860; Murphy 126; M. Sicherl, Griechische Erstausgaben des Aldus Manutius , pp. 362-364.
