PAULUS DE MIDDELBURGO. Paulina de recta Paschae celebratione: et de die passionis domini nostri Iesu Christi. Fossombrone, Ottaviano Petrucci, 1513 [Colophon:] Impressum Forosempronii per spectabilem virum Octauianum petrutium … anno Domini 1513 die octaua Iulii Folio, mm. 320x205; Contemporary half calf and wooden covers, sign of clasps, spine with 4 ribs, handwritten title on the lower part; leaves 395 n.n., lacking last blank leaf; Collation: a8 b6 c-s8 t10 ; A-O8 W6 P-2F8 2G5. Calendar text printed in red and black, numerous initials engraved in wood on black, round type. On the verso of the title page woodcut depicting a shield with the arms of Pope Leo X surmonted by the tiara and the keys of St. Peter, on leaf A2R coat of arms of the Pope to and on leave A1R coat of the Emperor Maximilian, the dedicatee of vol. 2. Four woodcut frames consist of four blocks and a full page woodcut. At the end of the volume great Printer's device. Ancient handwritten to inside covers, with Francisco Ramirez signature and reference to the Villa Villamanta and to the Villa of Serranillos. Excellent condition, specimen with wide margins. On leaf FF4 there is a reference to the discovery of America and are cited Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci.
Very rare first edition. First book printed in Fossombrone. Typographical masterpiece, this illustrated work, divided into two parts, concerns the reform of the calendar. The illustrations are probably by Francesco Griffo, the famous inventor of the italic type of Aldus Manutius who at that time was working with the printer of Fossombrone. The exquisite woodcut at full page consists of three related parts: the first depicts the Virgin in glory with the child in a semi-circle of the Popes, the second and the third representing Christ on the cross that stands on scenes from the Passion. Paul of Middelburg, astronomer, mathematician and humanist, was a canon in his hometown, he taught at Louvain and Padua: later became bishop of Fossombrone. He wrote books on mathematics and astronomy: the Paulina, presented during the fifth Lateran Council for examining the reform of the calendar, is considered his most important work. Ottaviano Petrucci of Fossombrone, first worked in Venice, where invented movable type to print music, then he returned to Fossombrone: this is the first book printed by him no music in his city, and is the first book printed in Fossombrone. Adams P504; Mortimer, Italian, 363. Griffo, see. NUC v. 445 p. 540; A. Filippetti, Ottaviano Petrucci and character of "Paulina", thesis, Urbino, Higher Institute for Artistic Industries, a.a. 1993-94. The Lot is offered with a valid export licence.
