Beschreibung:

Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934) Winter day at Østergade, Copenhagen, seen towards Kongens Nytorv. In the foreground, the artist's wife dressed in a fur coat. In the background, a horse-drawn omnibus driving down Østergade. Signed and dated Paul Fischer 1907. Oil on panel. 35×53 cm. Literature: Michael Varming “Paul Fischers København - og vores”, 2006, mentioned and ill. p. 10. Jane Sandberg, “Paul Fischer - Ingen kan tjene alle til takke”, 2005, ill. p. 26. Paul Fischer has painted Copenhagen many times in all kinds of weather and he once said in an interview (in Danish): “I like Copenhagen best when the snow softens the contours or the light shines on the rain-soaked asphalt.” (Jane Sandberg p. 28). The present painting is one of the finest examples of his skill. Through the bare trees around the Krinsen at Kongens Nytorv, the Thottske Palace (today the French embassy) can be seen as well as the equestrian statue of Christian V. The soft golden light of the setting sun illuminates the background.
