ink on paper, 1976 3 1/2 x 3 inches (85 x 76 mm) signed Britton, p. 10 Bowles, an American "ex-pat", inscribed this self-portrait from Tangier, his adopted home since 1947. His career spanned from pre-war Paris and Gertrude Stein's salon to success as a composer studying with Aaron Copland, before leaving the U.S. and turning to fiction writing. A key influence on the Beats, Bowles' work was often marked by disquiet and displacement. His best-known novel The Sheltering Sky (1949) was filmed by Bertolucci, however, the author's short fiction has proved to be most influential. In 1991, Bowles was awarded the Rea Award for the Short Story.
