PATHELIN, PIERRE. Maistre Pierre Pathelin, de nouveau reveu, & mis en son naturel. Avec le Blason & loyer des fauces & folles Amours. Paris: veuve de Jean Bonfons [c. 1563]. Small 8vo, 132 x 85 mm. (5 3/16 x 3 3/8 in.), brown morocco, covers richly gilt and gilt-stippled in a Grolieresque design of interlacing strapwork and arabesques, smooth spine gilt-lettered, brown morocco doublures with dentelle border, by THOUVENIN, extremities of spine and corners scuffed, small hole to D7 catching 5 or 6 letters, some minor marginal soiling . Collation: A-L8. 88 leaves. Roman type, woodcut printer's device on title, 2 small text woodcuts, one repeated, woodcut initials. ANNOTATED COPY OF BERNARD DE LA MONNOYE, nearly every page with substantive corrections or additions in his small neat hand, the stanzas numbered. The present volume was used as copy for La Monnoye's own edition of this most famous of fifteenth-century French farces, published in Paris by Coustelier in 1723 (Tchemerzine V, 142 b). This appears to be the ONLY KNOWN COPY of this edition or issue, a page for page reprint (or reissue with new title) of an edition by Jean Bonfons (d. 1562), the first in roman type, dated c. 1550 by Tchemerzine. Brunet IV, 435 (this copy); Tchemerzine V, 141 (citing Brunet). Provenance : "A Delio, nomen", late seventeenth or eighteenth-century inscription on title -- Marginal note signed L.C.D.M. on F2v -- Bernard de La Monnoye (1641-1728), see above -- Martineau de Soleinne, (sale, 4 parts, Paris, 1844) -- E. Baudelocque (sale 10-30 April 1850) -- Marquis Maximilien de Clinchamp, bookplate (sale, 1-5 May 1860) -- (from Lardanchet, 1951, 45/938).
