PASSE, Crispin van de (1589-1670). Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivam veramque formam accuratissime delineatae... Utrecht & Arnheim: Crispin van de Pass and J. Jansson, 1614-1616.
PASSE, Crispin van de (1589-1670). Hortus Floridus in quo rariorum & minus vulgarium florum Icones ad vivam veramque formam accuratissime delineatae... Utrecht & Arnheim: Crispin van de Pass and J. Jansson, 1614-1616. 4 parts in one volume, small oblong 2 o (175 x 276 mm). 115 (of 117) engraved plates, early proof impressions with no text on versos. Engraved title in Latin. Letterpress titles in Dutch and French (first line of French title cropped). Letterpress text in French. (Lacking plate 14 in part II and plate 10 in part III, small hole in plate 49 in part I, some light browning and staining.) Contemporary Dutch vellum. Provenance : W. Ibbitt (owner's inscription and stamp); acquired from Ray E. Lewis, 1978. THE DUTCH ISSUE, without text on back of the plates OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS AND INFLUENTIAL OF THE EARLY FLORILEGIA. Savage explains in his article "The Hortus Floridus," that the plates without text on verso represent the earliest impressions, even though the issue with the text was published earlier. There is great discrepancy between copies in the number of plates and their states, the present copy includes part I-IV but does not include the Altera Pars which is "of inferior design and technique" (Savage). Nissen BBI 1494; Hunt 199; Savage "The Hortus Floridus" Transactions of the Bibliographical Society, second series IV, pp.181-205, state 2a and 2b.
