PASCAL, BLAISE. (9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.), eighteenth-century parchment over flexible pasteboard lining, edges red-sprinkled, sewing of first few quires loose, mostly marginal dampstaining, some wrinkling to 17th letter and to a few leaves of the pamphlets bound in at end, a few minor marginal tears to the latter pamphlets . FIRST EDITION, consisting of the 18 separately published letters with a title-page and "Advertissement" in 3 pages (first issue, mentioning only 17 letters), the 17th letter in 12 pages, with the 8-page Refutation to the 12th letter, the second letter dated 29 January 1656, the 18th letter reprinted "sur la copie imprimée à Cologne le 24 Mars 1657". Bound in at end are six polemical pamphlets dated 1649-1657, containing Jesuit responses to the Jansenists, and a Second Recueil des pieces secretes de ce temps , dated 1649 (not listed by Tchemerzine or Scheler). PMM 140; Tchemerzine V, 62-67. In the Lettres Provinciales , undertaken in response to the Jesuits' condemnation for heresy of Pascal's friend Antoine Arnauld, Pascal defends the Jansenist doctrine of grace against recent Jesuit attacks, while ironically exposing Jesuit laxity and casuistical methods of argument. Clandestinely published in 18 separate anonymous letters, the work was "a magnificent sustained invective, after which the Jesuits never recovered their former position in France...and a noble defence of thought in religious faith" (PMM). All of the letters were immediately reprinted by several different presses; these many different anonymous editions have yet to be the object of a full-scale study. Provenance : Despargé Buveau, Emil Monneraye, eighteenth-century signatures on title -- Monogrammed inkstamp, "FFR" with motto "La ou ailleurs", on title -- Paul Voûte, monogrammed bookplate (sale, Paris, 9-11 March 1938, lot -- ).
