PARADIN, CLAUDE. Quadrins historiques de la Bible [ Bound with :] [FONTAINE, CHARLES]. Figures du Novveau Testament. Lyons: Jean de Tournes 1558. 2 vols. in one, small 8vo, 170 x 105 mm. (6 1/4 x 4 1/8 in.), dark blue crushed levant morocco, covers panelled with triple gilt fillet, spine gilt and gilt-lettered, turn-ins gilt, edges marbled and gilt, by BAUZONNET-TRAUTZ, a few lower margins slightly soiled, lightly washed and pressed . Third editions of both works (second editions with the full series of cuts), arabesque title borders, printer's device on Q2v, arabesque ornament on Q3r, Q4 blank, 327 woodcuts by Bernard Salomon (231 in the first work and 96 smaller cuts in the second, 3 repeated), printed one to a page above verse text in italic type. 199 of the 231 woodcuts of Bernard Salomon's Biblical series were first published in the first edition of Paradin's Quadrins in 1553. Completed in 1554, the full series was thenceforth used by De Tournes in numerous Latin, French, Italian and German editions of the Bible as well in emblem book form. While the cuts show the influence of earlier biblical woodcut series, "the cumulative effect of Salomon's carefully detailed scenes is that of an individual contribution to Bible illustration" (Harvard/Mortimer French , p. 109). Brun, p. 131 ("pur chef-d'oeuvre de l'école lyonnaise"); Cartier II, 393 and 396; Fairfax Murray French I, 40 (1555 ed.) and II, 615 (1559 ed.); Harvard/Mortimer French 87 and 85 (1556 edition). A TALL COPY. Provenance : Nicolas Yemeniz, bookplate (sale, Paris, 9-31 May 1867, lot ) -- Robert Hoe, bookplate (sale, Anderson, 15 January 1912, lot 2607).
